Most local authorities will see their housing targets increase under the government’s proposed new method for determining how many homes should be build in each area.
A proposed new method was announced yesterday as part of changes to the national planning policy framework.
More than 200 councils would see their housing targets increase under the proposed method, when compared with the current method. Some 63 would be expected to facilitate at least double the number of new homes than under the current system.
Redcar and Cleveland BC would see the biggest proportional increase of 1,338% from 45 under the current method, to 642 under the proposed method.
Earlier today Teesside Live reported that the council is facing opposition from residents over a developer’s plans to build 114 properties. The paper reported the council has decided to withdraw the reasons the developer was refused planning permission ahead of an appeal later this year, prompting concerns from residents and opposition councillors.
There are 26 councils outside of London that will see lower targets under the proposed method. This includes Coventry City Council, where the target would drop by 50% to 1,527.
Birmingham City Council would see the next largest percentage drop of 31% to 4,974.
Some 26 councils do not have comparable figures because under the current system they have a joint plan with one or more neighbouring authorities or have recently been involved in local government reorganisation.
London is the only region that would see a drop in the housing target overall, with 24 of the 33 boroughs being set lower targets under these methods.
Tower Hamlets LBC’s target would be 58% lower under the proposed method, followed by Barking & Dagenham LBC where the target would be 57% lower.
Kensington & Chelsea RBC would have a housing target that 209% higher under the new method, which would see it expected to create 4,271 new homes.
